If you’ve got a sweet tooth, we’ve got just the fix: our traditional Italian cannoli! Who can resist tubes of fried dough filled with sweet ricotta cheese and chocolate chips and drizzled with chocolate? It’s a little slice of Sicily in Arvada!
Yes, cannoli were birthed on the island of Sicily, specifically the northwest city of Palermo and the northeast city of Messina. It’s believed that cannoli were originally prepared as a treat for Carnevale (Italian for the Christian celebration of Carnival) season and likely was designed to look like a symbol of fertility.
Tiny versions of cannoli (no bigger than your finger) are called “cannulicchi,” but there are also versions in Palmero that are as large as a fist! And while the standard definition of a cannoli includes sweetened ricotta cheese in a tube of fried dough, you’ll likely see creative variations somewhere. Just look at these flavors of cannoli that you can buy:
- Pecan Caramel
- Peanut Butter
- Chocolate Ricotta
- Mint Chip
It’s worth noting that cannoli make a great dessert for parties and events. They’re portable, affordable and can be stacked into playful towers. At 3 Sons Catering, we love to see people’s faces light up when they see cannoli on the table!
